Food, we all love it. We would even go to war to guarantee that we have it. Food has changed more than you would have expected in the last decade. Ever since the U.S. Food and drug administration approved the Flavr Savr tomato to be sold in grocery stores in 1994, the genetic composition of our everyday foods have been changing at an alarming rate. World Health Organization defines genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, including between non related species (World Health Organization, food safety). Such methods are used to create GMO plants which result in GMO food crops. This technology is called biotechnology. Genetic engineering has been a some what sensitive subject in present day debates, especially when it comes to the widespread consumption of GMO foods. There have been many studies conducted that both support and discredit the use of the biotechnology. There are many reasons why someone would seek to alter a plant s genetic profile, it could be to increase crop yield, or to fight off diseases, or possibly just to create an overall more efficient organism. As some scientists see this as a revolutionary technology that could possibly end world hunger, others view it as a major health concern.
